EDWARDS

This is an Edwards 189CF professional tenor trombone bell, handcrafted in Elkhorn, WI at the Edwards factory. It is built from yellow brass, features a traditional 8" flare, and is finished in clear lacquer.

Condition is pre-owned and very good. The bell has no dents or dings, and the lacquer remains largely intact with just a few small rim spots of acid bleed. This cosmetic issue occurs during the lacquering process if soldering flux residue remains under the finish. It often appears months or years after manufacture.

Importantly, acid bleed is strictly cosmetic. It does not spread significantly over time, nor does it affect the way the instrument plays. Edwards trombones are known for their craftsmanship and tonal flexibility, and this bell section remains a top-quality component, ideal for use in a .525 bore setup.

FAQ – Edwards Lacquer & Acid Bleed

Q: What is acid bleed on a lacquered brass instrument?
A: Acid bleed is a minor cosmetic defect caused by soldering flux residue that was not fully removed before lacquer was applied. Over time, it creates small discolorations, often near seams or the bell rim.

Q: Does acid bleed affect playability or durability?
A: No. Acid bleed is only a visual imperfection. It does not alter the sound, response, or longevity of the instrument. Many professional brass players own lacquered horns with some degree of acid bleed.

Q: Can acid bleed be repaired?
A: Fully removing acid bleed typically requires stripping and relacquering the bell, which is rarely recommended unless for purely cosmetic reasons. Most players simply accept it as part of the instrument’s natural aging.

Q: Why choose a lacquered bell vs. unlacquered?
A: A lacquered bell helps preserve the original finish and reduces tarnish, while still allowing the horn to resonate freely. It requires less maintenance than raw brass and retains a clean appearance for most of its life.
