This Earl Williams Model 8 is a rare example from the Donelson, Tennessee era of production β one of the final phases in the legacy of Earl Williams trombones. This particular instrument remains in mint condition and has been fully serviced in our shop for maximum playability. No cosmetic or mechanical work is needed. It features an 8 7/8" yellow brass bell and a .522 bore handslide, designed to take a small shank mouthpiece.
The slide is excellent, with no history of damage or repairs. Lacquer condition is outstanding with only minimal signs of wear from light use. The trombone was originally owned by a professional player who purchased this Model 8 as his second Williams horn β his first being a Model 6 acquired after returning from World War II. He reportedly favored the Model 6 but kept this one in pristine condition for special performances.
What makes the Model 8 so versatile is its ability to handle nearly all playing situations β from small group jazz to symphonic section work β unless you specifically need an F-attachment. It responds exceptionally well with a large small-shank mouthpiece, such as a 6.5AL or even a 5G, delivering a big, resonant tone. With smaller mouthpieces like 11C or 7C, it offers a more compact and focused sound β still sweet, but more intimate.
Low notes speak with surprising power and resonance for a medium bore trombone, while the upper register remains sweet, clear, and well-centered. This is truly a playerβs horn β ideal for professionals, collectors, and advanced students who want something rare and distinctive with a legendary pedigree.
βWhy is the Earl Williams Model 8 a top choice for versatile playing without an F-attachment?
The Model 8 is considered by many players to be a βone-horn solutionβ for a wide range of styles. With its slightly larger .522 bore, it bridges the gap between a traditional small bore jazz horn and a symphonic tenor β allowing the player to project, blend, or solo with ease. Earl Williamsβ handmade slides are known for their fluid action, and the bell profile on the Model 8 adds warmth and core to the sound. Itβs especially attractive for trombonists who want the flexibility of a larger sound without committing to a full large bore setup or adding valve complexity.
