Overview
This Courtois Prestige Symphonie 400R is a refined large-bore straight tenor trombone designed for players who want a warm, orchestral sound and excellent balance without the added complexity of an F-attachment. Featuring an 8.75" gold brass bell, yellow brass neck and tuning slide, and a .547 bore handslide, this instrument delivers a playing experience reminiscent of a classic Conn 8H-style setup, while benefiting from modern build precision and modular flexibility.
Recently serviced and playing properly throughout the range, this trombone is well suited for symphonic, chamber, and ensemble work, and represents a strong value compared to todayβs boutique component pricing.
Player Perspective
From a playerβs standpoint, the 400R offers a warm, centered core with a relaxed resistance profile that encourages efficient airflow. The balance and weight distribution feel natural in the hands, contributing to an ergonomic playing experience that holds up well in longer rehearsals or performances.
For players who prefer a straight large-bore tenor, this setup provides clarity and depth without the added mass of a valve section. Importantly, the instrumentβs modular design allows for a valve to be added later should repertoire or ensemble demands change β making this a flexible platform for players whose needs may evolve over time.
Leadpipe & Receiver Update
The instrument retains its original factory nickel silver leadpipe, but the leadpipe cap has been thoughtfully updated. The original design was difficult to remove by hand, so this was resolved by fitting a smooth press-fit cap rather than a locking or threaded mechanism. This allows for quick, tool-free leadpipe changes if a player wishes to experiment with feel or response. While other press-fit leadpipes could be used with greater ease, we recommend starting with the original factory leadpipe, which is well balanced in both timbre and resistance and pairs especially well with the gold brass bell.
Case & Transport
The included BAM case is a Courtois model-specific hybrid design, positioned between a traditional heavier carbon-fiber or wood shell case and a soft gig bag. It offers excellent protection while remaining lightweight and easy to handle. The rigid internal structure provides proper support and precise fitment for the instrument, while the soft exterior and streamlined profile make it significantly more ergonomic to carry than bulkier hard cases. This is an exceptionally well-fitting, travel-friendly solution that balances protection, comfort, and practicality.

ATP FAQs
Who is this trombone best suited for?
This trombone is ideal for advancing students, adult amateurs, and professional players seeking a large-bore straight tenor with a warm sound and comfortable, ergonomic feel. Itβs particularly well suited for symphonic and chamber settings where clarity and blend are priorities.
Why choose a straight large-bore tenor instead of an F-attachment model?
Many players prefer the lighter weight, simplicity, and direct response of a straight tenor. This instrument delivers large-bore depth and projection without additional mechanical complexity.
Can a valve be added later?
Yes. The modular design allows for a valve section to be added in the future if needed, making this a flexible long-term option.
How does this compare to modern boutique options?
In todayβs market, boutique custom bells alone often start around $1,500. This fully serviced, complete Courtois package offers a noticeable value for players looking to step into a refined large-bore instrument without full custom pricing.
