Conn valve trombone assembled using a vintage Conn gold brass bell section paired with an unbranded valve section. There are no markings on the valve block, which suggests it was most likely manufactured overseas. Despite the mixed origin, the valve section fits perfectly and pairs nicely with this classic Conn bell, producing a smooth, warm tone that responds easily.
This instrument plays very well as configured and requires no service or repairs to improve playability.
The gold brass bell provides a rich, centered sound, and the valves move freely with good compression, offering a unique alternative to a traditional slide trombone setup.
Includes a Protec gig bagβstyle case for easy transport and protection.
What is the difference between a valve trombone and a slide trombone?
A valve trombone uses piston or rotary valves instead of a slide to change pitches, similar to a trumpet or euphonium. While a slide trombone relies on precise slide positions to achieve different notes, a valve trombone allows players to use familiar fingering patterns. This makes valve trombones especially popular among trumpet players who double on trombone or in marching situations where slide movement can be difficult.
Are valve trombones still used widely today?
Valve trombones are less common in modern orchestras and symphonic settings but are still used in certain jazz, brass band, and marching band contexts. Jazz improvisors, in particular, often gravitate toward valve trombones for their smoother articulation and faster technical facility. A great example is Bob Brookmeyer (1929β2011), a highly influential American jazz musician known for his innovative work as a valve trombonist, pianist, composer, and arranger. Brookmeyer gained prominence in Gerry Mulligan's groups and helped showcase the expressive potential of the valve trombone in jazz improvisation. Their compact design and valve mechanism also make valve trombones practical for tight performance spaces and for players who prefer valve fingering over slide technique.
