Overview
The Conn 6H remains one of the most respected jazz trombones ever built, and many players consider the Elkhart-era examples to represent the model at its very best.
This Conn 6H, serial number 524003, was built in Elkhart, Indiana circa 1955 during what many regard as the golden era of Conn production. The instrument features the classic 8" yellow brass bell with unsoldered rim, .500" bore handslide, gold brass outer slide tubes, and nickel silver end crook that helped define the legendary Conn 6H sound.
What separates this example from many vintage 6Hs currently available is the professional restoration work that has already been completed. We performed a full shop service and installed factory-original Greenhoe .500" inner slide tubes. The result is exceptional alignment, outstanding slide action, and a professional-level playing experience that is ready for immediate performance use.
The instrument retains its original burgundy leather-bound Conn case from the 1950s, a feature rarely found in such complete condition today.
Having personally played and owned many Conn 6Hs over the years, this remains my favorite jazz trombone design ever produced. The combination of efficiency, flexibility, tonal color, and effortless response continues to make the 6H a benchmark against which many jazz trombones are measured.
Condition Summary
Condition is excellent for a vintage professional trombone now approaching seventy years of age.
Most importantly, the bell has never suffered major damage, creasing, or significant trauma. The neckpipe alignment to the bell section remains excellent, something experienced players immediately notice when evaluating vintage instruments.
The original lacquer shows normal wear consistent with a well-preserved professional instrument from the 1950s. Portions of the outer bell and handslide have naturally worn over time, creating the character and appearance often associated with desirable vintage jazz trombones. None of this affects performance in any way.
The slide is a major highlight of this instrument. During servicing, factory-original Greenhoe .500" inner slide tubes were installed and the slide was professionally aligned. The result is exceptionally smooth action with excellent response throughout all positions.

Player Perspective
This is exactly what players hope to find when searching for a great vintage Conn 6H.
The slide is fast, light, and incredibly responsive. Notes begin immediately, articulation feels effortless, and the horn encourages fluid phrasing in a way that few designs can match.
The classic combination of an unsoldered-rim bell, gold brass outer slide tubes, and lightweight .500" bore architecture produces the sound that made the Conn 6H famous. It is vibrant, flexible, colorful, and expressive without becoming overly bright or thin.
Players often associate the Conn 6H with artists such as Frank Rosolino, whose fluid technique and lyrical improvisation demonstrated exactly what this model can do. The 6H was also a familiar sight among players connected to the Stan Kenton tradition, where projection, flexibility, and musical personality were highly valued.
This instrument would be an outstanding choice for:
- Jazz soloists
- Improvising musicians
- Big band lead and section players
