CONN

Conn 44H trombone, made in the 1930s. During this era, the Conn 44H was considered an all-around workhorse of a trombone, trusted by many professional and amateur musicians alike.

A distinctive feature of the 44H is its rimless bell design, also known as the Vocabell. The Vocabell was developed to create a more vibrant, resonant tone without the added weight and damping effect of a traditional bell rim. Some of these instruments were elaborately engraved, sometimes featuring "Pan the Piper" or other decorative designs. This particular 44H is a plain version, without engraving, giving it a more understated and classic look.

Over time, this horn has developed freckling in the finish, a natural sign of aging that adds character to its vintage appearance. It has also had a few repairs, including a tuning slide crook guard and some small patchwork in other areas. Despite these repairs, the horn remains structurally sound and is fully playable.

The slide condition is not perfect, showing some wear consistent with its age, but it is still playable and functional for casual or light use. For those who enjoy vintage horns or are looking for a piece of American trombone history, this 44H is an intriguing option.

It is ready to play as-is, with no additional cleanup needed. A non-original case is included to provide basic protection during storage or transport.

What is a Vocabell on a Conn trombone?
The Vocabell is Conn's innovative rimless bell design, introduced to reduce weight and enhance resonance. It produces a more open, singing tone and offers a different response compared to traditional bells with rims.

Why do vintage trombones often have finish freckles and patches?
Freckling and small patches are common signs of age and use. Many older horns were repaired rather than replaced, preserving their playability and extending their musical life.

Archived in our sold collection, this Conn 44H stands as a testament to Conn's ingenuity and craftsmanship during the golden age of American brass instrument making.
