CONN
Conn Trumpet

Overview

This Conn 12A Coprion cornet, serial number 386849 from 1949, has now been sold and is preserved here as part of The Brass Exchange Archive of Sold instruments. Built in Elkhart, Indiana during Conn’s post-war golden era, the 12A represents one of the most refined American cornet designs of its time.

The instrument featured Conn’s famous Coprion bell — a seamless electro-formed copper alloy bell rather than a traditional brazed construction. This process produced the distinctive red-honey finish and a warm, centered tone that became a hallmark of Conn brass instruments. The 12A can be thought of as the cornet counterpart to the Conn 12B Coprion trumpet, sharing similar craftsmanship and tonal goals.

Before sale, this cornet received full in-house preparation at The Brass Exchange, including chemical cleaning, valve inspection, new pads and felts, and mechanical adjustment. The valves were smooth and responsive, slides operated correctly, and overall condition was excellent for a mid-century instrument that had spent decades in careful storage.

The Conn 12A is valued by collectors, comeback players, and students alike. It offers light weight, quick response, and classic Conn depth of sound that many modern entry-level imports cannot replicate. Instruments from this Elkhart period remain important examples of mid-century American brassmaking.

📚 Historical Perspective

Conn’s Coprion-bell instruments became iconic in the late 1930s through 1950s, documenting an innovative manufacturing method that produced seamless copper bells with distinctive tonal character. Post-war Elkhart Conn cornets such as the 12A were widely used by students and professionals, and many survive today in playable condition because of their durable construction.

Clean, original examples with preserved lacquer and documented service history are increasingly difficult to locate. Archive listings like this help players research vintage Conn cornets and understand their historical context and value.
