Benge 290 Bass Trombone | Vintage Archive | Sold

This listing features a Benge Model 290 Bass Trombone, now sold and preserved here for reference as part of The Brass Exchange historical archive. The bell section is unlacquered, giving it a natural, resonant tone and a warm vintage aesthetic. The instrument was chem cleaned and professionally serviced, with no dents or dings anywhere on the bell or tuning slides.

The handslide is in excellent condition, with perfect alignment and fast action β€” critical for bass trombone players who require smooth response and accuracy. This model was priced under $2,000, making it a great first bass trombone for a developing player, doubler, or jazz musician seeking a dependable vintage option without breaking the bank.

Included with the original sale was an older-style Protec bass trombone case, providing durable protection and ease of transport.

A Brief History of Benge Instruments

Benge was founded by Elden Benge, principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony in the 1930s, who began crafting trumpets by hand in 1935. Following his passing, production moved to Burbank, California under his son Donald β€” a period regarded by many professionals as the brand’s golden era.

In later years, Benge was acquired by King/UMI and eventually Conn-Selmer, with production shifting to Eastlake, Ohio. Although best known for their trumpets, Benge also produced bass trombones like the 290, which offered solid performance at an attractive price point. Vintage Benge instruments remain sought after by players and collectors for their lightweight design, responsive blow, and studio-friendly tone.
