Benge

Benge 190 — Vintage Straight Large Bore Tenor Trombone. This rare model features an 8.5" yellow brass bell and a .547 bore handslide, designed for use with a standard large shank tenor mouthpiece. Made in the late 1970s to early 1980s, this was Benge’s top-of-the-line straight tenor model for professional players seeking open feel, tonal flexibility, and durability without an F-attachment.

This example received full shop service, including chemical bath, rotor alignment check (N/A on this model), and slide adjustment. The handslide is smooth and responsive, with no plating loss or misalignment. It shows very minimal wear and appears to have been used sparingly—there are no signs of major repairs or prior damage.

Sonically, the 190 offers excellent center and tonal color. It plays with a solid core and impressive clarity, especially in louder dynamics. It’s a great fit for players looking for a jazz large bore setup, or anyone who prefers a straight tenor with traditional feel and projection. It also performs well across genres—from symphonic pops to commercial brass settings—thanks to its versatile bore and bell design.

Historically, there was significant crossover between Benge and King during this period, with some components and manufacturing processes shared across both brands. As a result, the 190 has a unique feel that blends King-style responsiveness with Benge’s signature build quality.

Includes the original Benge case, complete with vintage stickers—a nice touch for collectors.

Are Benge brass instruments still made today?
No — original Benge brass instruments are no longer in production. The Benge name has changed ownership multiple times, and while it was once a respected American-made brand used by professionals in both trumpet and trombone circles, manufacturing ceased in its original form decades ago. The trombones from the late 1970s and early 1980s, like this 190 model, represent some of the last and best examples of true Benge craftsmanship. Today, they are considered collector-grade instruments with a loyal following.

This Benge 190 has been sold and is now shown here as a historical reference for musicians and collectors.
