Overview

This Bach Stradivarius Corporation Era Model 16LT (serial 20488) was built in the mid-1970s, a period many players associate with exceptionally consistent Bach build quality and tone. The 16LT represents the lightweight evolution of Bach’s classic dual-bore small-bore design, delivering quick response, flexibility, and a beautifully centered sound that records effortlessly.

This example includes its original Bach case and was previously owned and optimized by a professional player. The dual-bore slide retains its lightweight nickel construction, while the nickel end crook was professionally replaced with a yellow-brass Bach end crook. That change subtly alters the feel and response—adding a touch of warmth and nuance to the already rich Bach overtone profile without sacrificing clarity or articulation.

There’s a reason players like Bill Watrous favored instruments in this family. These horns speak easily, sound full without effort, and sit perfectly in commercial, studio, and big band settings. While often labeled a “jazz” trombone, many professional orchestral players also rely on small-bore Bachs like the 16 for show programs, pops, and big-band-style repertoire—situations where a .547 bore simply isn’t the right tool.

The same Bach design philosophy that made the 42B, 36B, and 50B so successful is fully present here—just scaled for agility, efficiency, and color.

Player Perspective

This 16LT plays exactly as a great one should: easy, resonant, and responsive across all dynamic levels. The lightweight slide feels fast and effortless, making it ideal for extended sessions, commercial doubling, and recording work where precision matters.

The brass end-crook modification slightly rounds the response and enhances tonal complexity without darkening the sound excessively. Articulations remain clean, the core stays focused, and the horn retains that unmistakable Bach shimmer in the overtones that players instantly recognize.

Condition Summary

  • Loose / removable press-fit leadpipe (as optimized by prior pro owner)

Bell Color Note:
In some lighting, the bell may present a slightly warmer or red-gold hue in photographs. This is not marked or designated as a gold-brass (16G) bell. It is possible the alloy contains marginally higher copper content than some modern Bach production, which can subtly influence appearance. True 16G bells exhibit a more dramatic and unmistakable gold-brass coloration—this bell does not fall into that category.

Questions Trombone Players Often Ask

Is the Bach 16LT suitable beyond jazz?
Absolutely. While iconic in jazz and commercial playing, many professionals use Bach 16-series trombones for studio work, pops concerts, and big-band-style orchestral programs where agility and color are critical.

What does the dual-bore design add?
The dual bore provides a smooth, natural transition through registers—offering both stability and flexibility without feeling resistant or stuffy.

Does the brass end crook change the sound significantly?
The change is subtle but meaningful: slightly more warmth and tonal depth while preserving the quick response players expect from a lightweight Bach slide.
