This Bach Corporation Era 6 1/2A small shank trombone mouthpiece was manufactured in Elkhart, Indiana between approximately 1963 and the late 1970s. Mouthpieces from this period were produced using traditional hand-lathe methods that differ from today’s CNC-based mass production, a distinction many players continue to value for feel and response.
All Bach 6 1/2–series mouthpieces share the same 25.4 mm rim diameter, and the 6 1/2A is no exception. Where it differs from the more commonly known 6 1/2AL is in the backbore design. The 6 1/2A uses a more standard backbore, rather than the larger, more open backbore of the AL model. The result is a mouthpiece that maintains the familiar rim feel while offering a slightly more controlled and centered response.
This example is offered in excellent condition, showing very little evidence of use. It has been professionally cleaned and polished here, with no defects, no plating loss, and a perfectly true shank. It is fully player ready.
The Bach 6 1/2A is a strong all-around choice, particularly well suited for small and medium bore tenor trombones in the .508 or .525 range. It provides flexibility, balance, and consistency across styles, making it a dependable option for players seeking a familiar feel with a bit more control than the 6 1/2AL.
