Overview
This Bach Model 8 Mt. Vernon era tenor trombone, serial number 4592, dates from the 1950s Mount Vernon production period and remains a very strong playing example of this less common Bach small bore design.
The Model 8 sits between the Bach 6 and Bach 12 in size and feel, using a .490 bore standard-weight handslide paired with a compact bell that produces a focused but surprisingly full sound. Many players find the Model 8 offers a unique balance of clarity, efficiency, and warmth that works extremely well for lead jazz, commercial playing, and studio work.
This instrument remains all original, including the original lacquer and components. It was previously owned by a career U.S. Air Force trombonist, and clearly saw regular professional use while being well cared for.
The horn has just received full shop service here at The Brass Exchange, including a chemical bath, slide adjustment, and alignment, and is now player ready.
Player Perspective
From a playing standpoint, the Bach Model 8 has always been an interesting design within the Bach lineup.
Compared with the smaller Bach 6 and the more widely known Bach 12, the Model 8 often feels slightly broader in tone while remaining very efficient. The .490 bore allows the instrument to respond quickly, while the compact bell keeps the sound focused and articulate.
Many players appreciate the Model 8 as a lead or commercial horn, where clarity and projection are important. At the same time, the horn has enough tonal depth to work very well for ballads, section playing, and studio work.
Vintage Mount Vernon Bach instruments are also known for their character and responsiveness, and this example retains that classic playing feel.
