Bach

This exceptional Bach 8 small-bore trombone, built in 1963, represents the final year of Mt. Vernon, NY production before Bach’s historic move to Elkhart, Indiana. Serial #6663 places it squarely in that transitional period, making it a standout example for both collectors and seasoned players.

All parts remain original, with factory lacquer intact and no signs of major repair or trauma. It has undergone full shop service here at The Brass Exchange, including a chemical bath, slide alignment, and full mechanical inspection. The result is a responsive, balanced, and remarkably clean-playing horn that needs no correction work.

With its yellow-brass bell and .490 bore handslide, the Bach 8 occupies a rare tonal niche between the model 6 and model 12 — a versatile small-bore instrument equally suited to chamber music, jazz lead, or light orchestral repertoire. The sound is pure Mt. Vernon — warm, velvety, and nuanced, yet still brilliant enough to project as a solo voice. The slide is original, straight, and tension-free; the bell flare shows no dents or lacquer disruption.

From a collector’s standpoint, 1963 marks the end of the Mt. Vernon era, and few surviving examples display this level of originality. Includes a non-original vintage coffin-style case in good condition.

✅ FAQs

Why is a Mt. Vernon Bach so collectible?
Mt. Vernon-built Bachs are revered for their hand craftsmanship and tonal integrity. Produced in small batches before the Selmer transition, they exhibit the meticulous assembly and resonance that define Bach’s golden era. For many collectors, the final 1963 horns represent the last true Mt. Vernon instruments.

How does the Bach 8 compare in feel to the 6 or 12 models?
Players often describe the 8 as the “sweet spot” — more breadth and color than the 6, yet more nimble and focused than the 12. It’s ideal for players moving between jazz and classical literature who prefer compact response without losing tonal complexity.
