Overview
The Vincent Bach 42BO Classic Open-Wrap Tenor Trombone has long been one of the most respected large-bore tenor trombones for orchestral and wind ensemble players. With a .547 bore handslide and an 8.5″ yellow brass bell, the 42BO delivers the broad, centered Bach tone that generations of players have relied on.
This example came from a single owner who primarily played bass trombone, so the instrument saw relatively light use over its life. All original lacquer and parts remain intact, and there is no history of damage or neglect. We completed a full shop service including chemical cleaning and inspection to ensure smooth operation and proper alignment.
The handslide is very good overall, with one small ding at the inner end of the slide crook visible in the photos. Removing it completely would require removing the crook and risking lacquer loss or alignment change, so we left it as-is because the slide plays cleanly and freely. The original case is included and functions well, with only a missing zipper tag noted.
For advancing players seeking their first professional tenor trombone—or collectors wanting a clean modern Bach open-wrap example—this was a very solid instrument.
📸 Photography From Our Early Archive
These photos come from the early years of The Brass Exchange and reflect the evolution of our instrument photography over time. While techniques and equipment have improved, our goal has always remained the same: clear, honest images that help musicians evaluate instruments remotely with confidence.
🏛️ Historical Perspective
The Bach 42BO became popular because it balanced projection with flexibility. The open-wrap F-attachment offers a freer feel than traditional closed wraps while maintaining the characteristic Bach tone. For decades it has been a standard recommendation for serious students moving into orchestral or wind ensemble repertoire.
Single-owner examples like this are especially appealing because they often show consistent care and original condition, making them useful references for collectors studying modern Bach production.
