Bach

This Bach Stradivarius 42BO is a professional large bore tenor trombone with the same core technical specifications as a standard brass 42BO: an 8.5" one-piece hand-hammered yellow brass bell, standard-weight yellow brass handslide, and a .547" bore for large shank mouthpieces (one included). Beneath the silver plate, every dimension matches the traditional brass model — the difference is in the finish. Is a single owner horn only used for a couple of years- and made within the last decade.

Trumpet players discovered the advantages of silver-plated instruments over a century ago, back when lacquer finishes were heavy and short-lived. The old-style lacquer behaved more like paint, wearing away quickly and sometimes flaking after only a few years. Silver plating was the answer — not only more durable, but it also made instruments livelier and more responsive. While silver does require extra care, such as frequent wipe-downs with a polish cloth or the occasional full silver polish, many players don’t mind a little tarnish at all.

In 2025, a brand new Bach 42BO in silver plate is available only by special order from Bach dealers, with a price tag of over $4,400. This example offers the same playing experience and appearance at a far better value — and it’s in stock for immediate delivery.

The 42BO’s open wrap F-attachment keeps airflow free and smooth in the lower register, improving legato response and lowering resistance. This example is in excellent playing condition, with all slides and rotor operating perfectly. The silver plate is in beautiful shape, showing only light signs of careful use.

Professionally serviced prior to listing, this horn is fully ready for immediate use in symphonic, chamber, or solo settings. Handslide is excellent, no inner tube defects, superior alignment- plays proper- bell section never damaged or repaired. Includes original modern Bach factory case in very good condition and a mouthpiece.

Common Questions About This Instrument

Q: How does silver plating affect the sound compared to lacquer?
A: Silver plating can add a touch of brilliance and crispness to the sound while still maintaining warmth. Many players find silver-plated instruments have a livelier response and a slightly more focused projection.

Q: Why doesn’t Bach offer more silver-plated trombones?
A: We don’t know exactly — Bach has traditionally kept silver plate as a special-order or limited-availability finish. It’s more common on their trumpets than trombones, making this example a rare find.

Q: Is this horn suitable for professional orchestra work?
A: Absolutely. The Bach 42BO is a long-standing standard among orchestral trombonists. Its large bore, 8.5" bell, and open wrap rotor produce a broad, commanding tone that blends well in section playing but can also project as a solo voice.
