This Bach 36 straight tenor trombone was made during the legendary Mt. Vernon, New York era, dating to approximately 1960. It features the classic 8" bell and a standard-weight .525 bore slide—hallmarks of the original 36 design. While the bell is not stamped with a "G" for gold brass, the alloy exhibits a warmer tone than typical yellow brass, suggesting a higher copper content. The sound is velvety, smooth, and rich—ideal for nuanced playing in both solo and ensemble settings.

All parts and lacquer are original on this instrument, making it equally appealing to professional players and vintage collectors. The handslide has been professionally adjusted and aligned in our shop, ensuring excellent response, quiet operation, and clean articulation in all registers. As a medium bore straight tenor, the Mt. Vernon 36 is incredibly versatile—perfect for artists who need a horn that can transition seamlessly from jazz to classical to commercial work.

It is important to note that today’s Bach 36G is designed to emulate this very instrument, yet even the best modern versions do not replicate the tonal character and projection found in original Mt. Vernon models. Current 36G production sells new for over $3,000, but serious players consistently seek out these earlier builds for their superior craftsmanship and unmatched playing feel.

This example includes the original Mt. Vernon French-style case, adding to its historical value. A true piece of Bach history—preserved and ready to be enjoyed for years to come.

Mt. Vernon-era Bach trombones were built with unmatched craftsmanship and tonal quality. The 36 from this era offers a warm, resonant tone and excellent projection that many pros find superior to modern versions. This makes them prized by collectors and players alike.
