This Conn 62H bass trombone is a true gem from the vintage Elkhart “N” series, made around 1970 and acquired from its original owner. It has received full shop service and is presented in exceptional playing and cosmetic condition.
The 9.5" rose brass bell is in perfect shape, with all original lacquer except for a small relacquered section on the F tuning crook where a few minor dents were professionally removed. One small ding remains on the F-wrap—less than 3/8"—but we opted to leave it rather than dismantle the valve. It's purely cosmetic and does not affect function or airflow.
This model features the original factory rotary dependent F/E tuning system, as designed by Conn. The Tuning-in-Slide (T.I.S.) mechanism functions flawlessly. The handslide is also a standout—flawless alignment, original outer tubes with minimal wear, and perfect inner tubes with no chrome loss. The original soldered-in leadpipe and factory first-position springs are both intact.
Visually, the horn is striking. But more importantly, it plays “like butter.” The tone is dark and rich, with the ability to project brilliantly when pushed—classic Conn commercial sound at its finest. This .562 bore bass with a rose brass bell blends beautifully in symphonic settings, yet still responds with agility and brilliance in jazz or commercial work.
Includes the original Conn hard case in outstanding condition. This is the type of horn that rarely surfaces, especially in such preserved, all-original condition. An ideal addition for a serious player or collector.
What does “N” Series signify on a Conn 62H?
The “N” serial prefix places this 62H in the Elkhart production era, circa 1970. These models are widely respected for their tonal complexity and quality of craftsmanship.
Is the T.I.S. system functional on this horn?
Yes. The Tuning-in-Slide mechanism is working exactly as designed. This system helps preserve bell resonance and intonation by moving the tuning slide into the handslide rather than the bell section.
What makes Elkhart 62Hs so desirable?
Elkhart Conn horns are known for rich tone, excellent valve construction, and long-term durability. This 62H retains all factory specs, making it an ideal reference horn or primary player.
