This Griego-Alessi 3F is a discontinued large-shank trombone mouthpiece developed during the long collaboration between mouthpiece maker Christian Griego and Joseph Alessi. Although the Alessi name is no longer used by Griego, the design remains relevant. Griego currently offers an Artist 3F with the same published dimensions at a new silver-plated retail price of $250.
The 3F has a 1.0495-inch, or 26.66 mm, inside diameter with a deep F cup and .283-inch throat. Its rim diameter is approximately in Bach 2G territory and is considerably larger than a conventional Bach 3G. This combination provides substantial room at the embouchure along with a broad, dark tonal profile.
This mouthpiece may be particularly useful for a large-rim tenor player, a second or third trombonist, or a player who regularly moves between tenor and bass trombone. The deep cup can add weight and richness to a naturally brilliant sound while retaining the presence needed for orchestral playing.
This example is in good used condition. The rim, cup and shank are round and free of structural damage. Cosmetic evidence of previous use includes normal surface marks and plating wear around the shank insertion area. It has been inspected and is ready to play.
Offered well below the price of the comparable current Griego Artist model, this is an affordable opportunity to acquire a professional boutique mouthpiece with the original discontinued Griego-Alessi engraving.
