Why is the Conn 88H considered a top choice for advancing players and professionals?
Since the late 1950s, the Conn 88H has been a trusted standard after being introduced for the renowned trombone professor Emory Remington at the Eastman School of Music, where he taught from 1922 to 1971. The original instrument was designed specifically for Remington, and Conn even named the accompanying mouthpiece the "Remington model." Early Conn 88H trombones (1950s–early 1970s) also featured a special "Remington leadpipe."
Over the years, the 88H became the model that set the standard for modern orchestral and band tenor trombones, with its F-attachment rotor, 8.5" bell diameter, and .547 bore handslide. The 88H even served as the predecessor to the well-regarded Bach 42B, which uses the same sizing specifications. Today, nearly all top manufacturers follow these same specifications for their symphonic tenor trombones — making the Conn 88H a truly legendary design that helped shape the instrument into the 21st century.
