Conn 88H Traditional Wrap Tenor Trombone – Recent Production Model

Overview

This Conn 88H is a recent-production example of the classic traditional-wrap model. It features the familiar 8.5-inch rose brass bell, .547-inch handslide, and conventional F-attachment configuration that generations of professional trombone players have associated with the 88H.

The instrument had seen very little use and was in virtually perfect condition when offered. The valve and handslide worked exactly as they should on a properly set-up factory instrument. This would have been an excellent first professional large-bore tenor for a student or advancing player ready to move into better equipment without paying the full price of a new instrument.

Condition and Playing Characteristics

This Conn 88H was in demo-model condition with very little playing time. The handslide was smooth and properly aligned, while the rotary valve and linkage operated exactly as expected. No service was required to improve its playability.

The 88H remains one of the most recognizable professional large-bore tenor trombones ever produced. The rose brass bell gives the instrument the broad, colorful Conn sound players expect, while the .547-inch slide provides the capacity needed for orchestral, concert band, brass ensemble, and solo playing.

Traditional Wrap Compared with Open Wrap

In our experience, there is not much difference in playing feel between the traditional-wrap and open-wrap Conn 88H models, and certainly no meaningful difference in their basic sound. We have always liked the traditional wrap for a practical reason: the F-attachment tubing does not extend several inches behind the main tuning slide.

That shorter configuration is less exposed to accidental damage and can be more comfortable in a tight orchestra or band setup. If another player or music stand is positioned close behind you, the additional tubing of an open-wrap instrument can sometimes be more trouble than it is worth.

The fundamental 88H design has remained remarkably consistent since the Elkhart-era instruments of the 1950s. Details such as the valve linkage have evolved, but the basic bell size, bore, playing concept, and traditional-wrap layout remain closely connected to the original design.
