Overview

This Conn 79H medium-bore tenor trombone, serial number M10413, was made in Elkhart, Indiana, in 1969. It retained its original parts and lacquer and remained in excellent overall condition.

The 79H combines a responsive .522 bore, small-shank mouthpiece receiver, 8-inch yellow brass bell with an unsoldered rim, and traditional F-attachment. It offers more breadth than a small-bore jazz tenor while remaining quicker and more efficient than a full .547 large-bore instrument.

Condition & Professional Service

This instrument received complete professional shop service, including chemical cleaning, handslide inspection and adjustment, and rotor service. The valve operated properly, the tuning slides fit as they should, and the instrument was fully prepared for immediate use.

The original inner slide tubes remained in excellent condition with no plating wear. The handslide was straight, responsive, and operating properly. The bell, valve section, tuning slide, and handslide retained their original components, and the original lacquer remained exceptionally well preserved for an Elkhart Conn of this age.

This was not simply a clean vintage trombone placed into serviceable condition. It played exactly as the Conn 79H was designed to play and was ready for a working musician.

Player Perspective

The Conn 79H is an especially useful choice for players who want the flexibility of an F-attachment without moving to the size and air requirements of a full large-bore orchestral tenor. Its medium-bore design produces a centered sound, clean articulation, and quick response while retaining enough depth for musical theatre, chamber work, commercial playing, and general doubling.

This particular instrument responded easily throughout the range, and the F-attachment integrated naturally with the open horn. Players familiar with vintage Conn trombones will immediately recognize the compact core, tonal color, and efficient feel associated with late-Elkhart production.
