CONN

Overview

This Conn 71H single-valve bass trombone was made in 1970 during one of the final years of Elkhart production. Serial number N22028, this example retained its original parts, lacquer, rotor assembly, and handslide when offered by The Brass Exchange.

The 71H is a remarkably approachable vintage bass trombone. Its lightweight 9.5-inch yellow brass bell, unsoldered bell rim, traditional rotor, and classic Conn handslide give it a quick response and a more flexible feel than many modern bass trombones. It produces a proper bass trombone sound without the additional weight and complexity of a contemporary double-valve instrument.

Condition at Time of Sale

This instrument showed considerable use and cosmetic wear throughout its original lacquer. Although not the most pristine Conn 71H we have handled, it remained structurally sound and in good playing condition.

The bell and tubing had no dents or dings. The original handslide retained its original inner slide tubes with no plating loss. The slide played well, and the traditional rotor operated properly. At the time of sale, no additional service was needed to improve the slide or valve action.

For players comparing vintage designs, it provides a useful reference for the feel and construction of an original Elkhart-era Conn bass trombone.
